Lord Of The Isles Tavern
Sophisticated atmosphere and food
Review by James (56 reviews), left on 17-11-2009 at 23:41
There may be pokies out the back with cheap and cheerful bar meals, but the main dining room of this hotel will appeal to those who are after a classier night out.
Lord of the Isles has been renovating over the last 18 months and the new, sophisticated fitout features a dark grey a... > more
Ocean Grove Pizza
Still awesome!
Review by James (56 reviews), left on 19-10-2009 at 22:57
This pizza shop is still the best around, general opinion is that the new branch near Safeway (which does takeaway and deliveries only) isn't quite as good as the main street shop, but it's dang close. Either one is a safe bet for a fantastic Saturday night in front of a movie! > more
Hi Sushi Japanese Restaurant
Awesome sushi

We get takeaway from these guys every now and then and they're great, but this week was the first time we stopped in for lunch at the new store at the edge of Westfield in the CBD.
It was great! The waitress was slightly surly (it seems the best Asian places are often like this) bu... > more
Go Food
Go, Go Food!
Review by James (56 reviews), left on 09-02-2009 at 17:13
Go Food is one of those casual cafes that seems to be always so busy that you wonder how the staff manage to look so peaceful.
It's much bigger than it looks from the front, with a large undercover gardenesque dining area out the back. The atmosphere is friendly and the decor inter... > more
Haze Restaurant and Cafe
Cool and classy, good food but menu lacks imagination
Review by James (56 reviews), left on 06-02-2009 at 15:47
This small bluestone building houses a cool and classy establishment that's more restaurant than cafe. The locals know there's only a couple of places worth eating out at in the area, and with thick walls to keep out the summer heat and a well-priced menu Haze is definitely one of them.
Ha'Penny Bridge
All new and modern, but not too chic
Review by James (56 reviews), left on 09-01-2009 at 09:43
I visited Hapenny Bridge last week with my wife for a meal before the movies - it's handily right across the road from Village Cinemas.
The fitout of the place is very nice, it's the first time I'd been in it since the Hapenny people took it over and it's now modern and clean insid... > more
Ballarat Lodge
True class in Ballarat
Review by James (56 reviews), left on 07-12-2008 at 11:33
One of the classiest places to dine out in Ballarat, you'll enjoy a fantastic meal and service here and be pleasantly surprised by the bill at the end of the night.
This restaurant is attached to the Ballarat Lodge Motel, but don't be fooled by the 'motel' label - this venue that h... > more
P. Frangos & Sons
Friendly staff, family atmosphere
Review by James (56 reviews), left on 11-06-2008 at 16:33
A true family atmosphere - and when I say that I mean it seems like the staff are all from one family. There's photos of them hanging in a line across the wall, fishing, building, smiling - family photos. It creates a welcoming, friendly atmosphere or hospitality.
Having said that,... > more
The Phoenix
Great Pub meals
Review by James (56 reviews), left on 17-12-2007 at 08:25
The Phoenix provides exactly what you want from a pub meal - great casual atmosphere, big meals and affordable prices.
You order at the kitchen and collect your own meals when they're ready in a kind of self-serve arrangement - certainly not fancy service but it works well for part... > more
Lime Cafe Bar
Nice.
Review by James (56 reviews), left on 17-11-2007 at 11:50
The Lime Cafe Bar is a small restaurant attached to the Mercure Hotel on Spring St. It's nice - modern interior, modern food, stylish bar - but while it's all good it's just not very... interesting.
The restaurant and bar seem to cater mostly to people staying in the hotel, but the... > more
