The takeaway from here has always been great so we decided to try dining in and were very impressed. Food was slightly more expensive than we had been expecting based on the takeaway prices but you generally got value for money and the dishes were of a very high standard. Service was fine and we appreciated the complementary port and chocolates after dessert. Overall an enjoyable evening and we'll definitely be back...can't wait to try the yum cha.
Yum Cha - Good value, great quality

The setting is basic at best; definetly not the place you go to for a romantic get-away. The staff seems to be made up of mostly students, Saying that, Eastern Palace is without a doubt one of the best Yum Cha restaurant in Melbourne.
Not all staff may be be fully trained silver service waiters, but all are always going out of their way to assist you. The place may not look as fancy as The Red Emperor, but maximises the space to satisfy the hordes of people that frequent this very good restaurant.
If you come for a Yum Cha feed, you could not do any better. The quality of the food is fantastic and all for a very reasonable price.
Everyone always has their own Yum Cha favourites. My favourites at Eastern Palace are the flat rice noodle and prawn and crispy salt & pepper calamari.
Happy feasting!
Great Yum Cha!!

Wow, I'm surprised at the diverse opinions being expressed about the Eastern Palace. This restaurant has consistently performed well. My family (including young kids) and friends have had Yum Cha there about a dozen times, and we have had dinner with friends & work colleagues a couple of times. Yum Cha is slightly westernised, so easier to cope with if you are an Anglo-Aussie. Yum Cha is excellent, say 9/10 and good value. Dinner 8/10. Note: I'm a hard marker and have been to some great restaurants.
Yum, Yum Cha!

Having been to Eastern Palace several times for Yum Cha, I find that their food is of great quality and I agree with KeithF, that it is comparable with Taipan.
Their style of Yum Cha is slightly Western but the presentation and quantity is something that many other Yum Cha restaurants overlook.
Though I have not been to the restaurant for dinner, I have a suspicion that the service differs greatly from that of the afternoon. It is quite normal and expected that they may not get to you straight away if it's at peak eating times.
If you disliked their service during your dinner maybe you should try their Yum Cha instead. To really see and taste what their food is like.
Ha Ha Ha. Eastern Palace...*Slaps hands on head*

Who wants to pay corkage, when you brought soft drinks in? Who wants crap service and wait half and hour for a glass of water to arrive?
If you do, go to Eastern Palace! It offers you sloth-like service and short, fat, grumpy "managers" ! * snorts*
Seriously though, the food ain't too bad, but if you want to talk about good service, nice staff, then just sit down, ok? SIT DOWN. We odered for a mud crab. We got a lobster. I'm allergic to lobsters, and it nearly took my life. And when we appealed, we were promised 10% off the bill. But the short fat troll manager said NO because he was a snail.
So save your petrol and your hard-earned money, cause Eastern Palace is just not worth going to. Oh yeah, in the afternoon, it's better.

The above review by "Gerry" leaves me a little baffled and makes one wonder if "Gerry" was having a very bad day when he attended the Eastern Palace!!
As a regular at the Eastern Palace, I can unreservedly say that their yum cha is easily one of the best in Melbourne and is more than on par with the highly regarded Tai Pan restaurant in Doncaster East.
The Eastern Palace scores a 5 in all criterion. The staff are friendly and attentive and couldn't be more helpful.
As a regular at the Eastern Palace, I am always greeted and treated like family and the atmosphere is positive and relaxed whilst remaining courteous and professional.
Notably, the Eastern Palace is quite often full to capacity, with the majority of the customers being of Asian background. This fact in itself speaks volumes in terms of quality of both food and service as many will agree.
Don't believe the hype. Eastern Palace = Unimpressive.

I don't know if the above review is really accurate. OR even slightly correct. For instance, there wasn't even a wine list offered to me, so I'm not sure how they rate 5 out of 5 for wine
In fact, they even removed our English menus and replaced them with Chinese language menus upon sitting down, even though I made no attempt to talk in Chinese. They refused to supply English menus when I even requested for them.
Instead, we asked for recommendations (from lack of menus) and were given none. Eventually we pried out of our hapless useless waiter some items on the menu with what seemed like a game of 20 questions.
Our entree was mediocre at best, with the oysters of questionable quality. The main meals were uninspiring and bland, with much to be desired. They were the least memorable parts of our evening.
Our table also lacked napkins or serviettes, and were refused or were told they had none available when asked. We clearly saw napkins on other tables and napkins were brought out to empty tables in preparation for the next days service.
So in summary, I am so dissatisfied with Eastern Palace that I am prepared to spend some time writing this review to warn other would be diners. Hopefully someone from this restaurant also reads this review so they can pick up their game.
Very unimpressed. Never again is already once too many.
Wonderful!

This restaurant is a wonderful find!
Fantastic food...
Definitely the best Chinese restaurant in the outer-eastern suburbs!
We had Quail, Wonton Soup, Peking Duck, Lobster in Ginger, Claypot Prawns....
Service was fabulous...
No need to trek into the city to get good Chinese....
