Down in the Docklands

The Docklands was completely new to me; a part of Melbourne I'd never seen. So I had no idea what to expect as we met friends for dinner there last night. They were down from QLD for the tennis and we thought that the Docklands would suit them (being kinda like Qld)

Mecca Bah has been reviewed (above) so I wont go into too much detail. We had the 'wait and we'll call you' thing too (and they did) so we went to the nearby 'Lounge Room' for a beer while we waited. The staff were up front and friendly and completely honest about how long it would take, which was good. You can't book so we were always taking a risk with 8 of us turning up.

I thought the food was tasty and interesting but pretty small serves. Those who ordered the pizzas did well; those who ordered the lamb kebabs were disappointed. (one kebab for $20) The dessert menu was small but tasty; I liked the turkish delight.

The beers were fine with James Squire and Stella on tap and there's some reasonable wines by the glass or bottle.

The view was pretty nice and our QLD friends felt right at home.

Pic here is from the Mecca Bah web site (I forgot my camera), which is at: http://www.meccabah.com/melb/

we went to mecca bah the other week. it was packed, but we spent the 10 minute wait at the bar. We had a mix of entre and mains: the boureks came with a sour yoghurt, the beetroot and rocket salad went really well with the fetta. The carrot salad, while it sounds a bit odd, is good. We also had the lamb pizza, the bread base is soft and tacky rather than hard crusted-yum.
This was all topped of with a great view, we sat right over the water as the sun was setting.

Middle East meets Docklands

My husband and I decided to go for a wander to Docklands restaurant precinct and we came across Meccah Bah. The menu instantly caught our eye and I think we were salivating just looking at it. Unfortunately, there was a 45 minute wait (they were pretty full but said they will call us on the mobile when a table was ready...and they did just that within 30 minutes!) We walked around for a bit and allowed our hunger to intensify. We were given a table for 2 which we thought was pretty private and intimate. The restaurant was dimly lit, but the table was lit up by subtle candlelight For Mezze (entree) we ordered Spicy Turkish kofte, yoghurt & mint sauce and a serve of Bastilla, Moroccan chicken pastries - DIVINE! We couldn't wait for round 2. For mains, we decided to try a Turkish Lamb Pizza and Chicken Tagine. We had never tried this before and enjoyed both dishes. Service was great and it was a laid back yet funky environment. The views were fantastic. We wouldn't normally resort to waiting for a table at a restaurant for 45 minutes however it was definitely worth the wait.

Right on the water at Docklands

Mecca Bar is another great restaurant that's right on the water, this time at Docklands. The food is middle-eastern but the setting is more like modern Mediterranean I guess, blue and white and clean with wooden floorboards, the view is fantastic and there's plenty of window seats or you can sit outside. The food is fabulous too, definitely try the pizzas they're fantastic whether you're after lunch or dinner or just an afternoon snack!
