Reviews for Shakahari Vegetarian Restaurant
Surprisingly Good!

Shakahari is a Carlton institution, or so I found out last night, though I admit I've never actually heard about it until now. But that's probably becauses I don't actively seek out vegetarian restaurants. But, with a daughter going Vegan, and her birthday choice, I found myself smack back in the middle of Carlton, next to La Mama, perusing a meat-less menu!
And I was pleasantly surprised. It's licensed but they have a reasonably good wine list available by the glass or bottle and some tasty dishes.
I had the dumplings (pumpkin) followed by a vegetable curry, both of which were great. The flavours were fantastic. Others around the table had satays (tofu) which they enjoyed and the linguini (mushrooms, snow peas etc.) No duds whatsoever! Prices were around $13 for entrees, $18-20 for main course.
The atmosphere and service were both great; a really different kind of Carlton experience to the croded ishbowls on Lygon St.
Shakahari, incidentally, is the Hindi word for vegetarian. It also means delicious!
