It's got to be one of the tiniest eateries in Melbourne, something that makes the line of people stretching from it seem all the more long. There were always two lines, one on the left for coffee, and one on the right for sushi, sashimi, inari and an assortment of other Japanese tidbits. They also has a really good selection of teas, from memory.
Back when I went to uni here, I wasn't exactly cashed up, and all I could ever really afford was the inari (rice in little pockets of deep fried bean curd). I used to get a few of these for less than five bucks, add a splash of the complementary soy sauce and wasabi, and I'd be set for a whole day.
The rest of the food I never really tried, although it looked pretty good, and given the constant stream of customers I doubt anything lasted long enough on the shelves to be anything less than very fresh.
Great vibe about the place - always very high energy, from fast pace of the queue, to the quick smiles of the staff, to the speedy production of decent tea and coffee, to the bent over, ernest conversation of those lucky few able to nab a small stool or bench within the eatery itself. Cool funky interior as well - rich reds against dark wood. Great mix of the old and the new.
