After visiting some family in the Como Private Hospital, we found ourselves famished and within walking distance to the many eateries nestled in the bayside village of Parkdale. The first one we came across was Comocean Restaurant, it was a cold and windy Tuesday evening around 8.30pm, the first thing that struck me was the smell of an open fire, then the aroma of bbq seafood. We wondered in thinking we may not get a table this late on a tues, but we were greeted openly and offered a table either the main room or in a private room with an open fire. Being a little wind chilled the second option was a no brainer.

Its a lovely old period home that has been converted into a restaurant, big tall ornate ceilings, picture rails, hardwood floors and open fire places, all tastefully decorated with an oceanic theme. We were seated near the fire, told the specials and left to review the menu. There was a good mix of seafood and steak dishes, pastas, risottos, duck & lamb. I decided on an eye fillet trio med rare and my wife went for the comocean skewers, these were the most expensive items on the menu being in the mid thirties, but there is a good selection meals in the high twenties.

The wine list has a good range of New Zealand sauv blancs, WA shiraz and merlots, it could use a few more pinots, although they do carry Mornington Estate Pinot, a very nice drop. We decided on the restaurants own label cab merlot from the Riverina, at $25 it proved to be a very nice merlot, very smooth solid bodied. The wine prices were very reasonable, $35 would buy you a very nice Margaret River Shiraz.

Our meals arrived in about 25 minutes, enough time to work up one hell of an apatite. The eye fillet trio placed and I was impressed, three large fillets of king island beef, each topped with a different sauce. Cooked to my liking one had a king prawn with béarnaise, one with artichoke heart and mushroom, and one with chicken liver brandy and red wine jus. I decided to start with béarnaise and prawn fillet, by the time I got to the last fillet I felt like I had eaten three main meals, even with a killer hunger I struggled to eat the last bite. The comocean skewers were also large in portion, two large skewers with bbq tiger prawns, scallops wrapped in bacon and a garlic Worcestershire sauce.

All in all not only was our hunger tamed with large portions, our pallets were satisfied with two very nice meals. Very fresh and prime produce, all tastefully prepared and presented, a nice drop of red, warm and friendly service, and a pleasant and inviting setting, all for under $100.
